THE SECOND AND THIRD CONDITIONALS. EXERCISES.

The second conditional is the Unreal Conditional as it is not imposible to happen but unlikely.
We form the II Conditional this way:

If + PAST SIMPLE , WOULD/WOULDN'T + INFINITIVE

The first part introduced by the particle "If" is known as the condition and the second part after the comma is known as the consequence or possible result.
Remember that we can start the Conditional sentence with the part that contains WOULD/WOULDN'T but the comma disappears then!!!


The third conditional is the Impossible conditional ans it's used to express regrets, hypothersis and lamenting yourself about something you did or didn't do.
As we cannot change the past, all we can do is express our wish it had been different.
We form the III conditional this way:

If + PAST PERFECT , WOULD/WOULDN'T + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

Finally, only to remind you that there are multiple varieties of the conditionals and some grammarians called them "hybrids" as opposed to the pure conditional formulas mentioned before.

A. Read the following situations and transform the sentences into 2nd or 3rd Conditional sentences

1 We didn't see The Two Towers because the cinema was closed.
2 She doesn't understand because you haven't explained the situation to her.
3 I never eat octopus because I get sick.
4 We didn't pick you up at the station because you didn't phone us.
5 She wanted to buy that picture, but she didn't have enough money.
6 We haven't got any matches, so we can't light a fire.
7 She isn't passing her exams because she isn't studying hard enough.
8 I didn't get to the meeting on time because my car broke down.
9 I never travel by plane because I get ear ache.
10 The restaurant was full so we couldn't get a table.
11 You can attend the meeting as long as you are a club member.
12 I'm too busy to go to the pub.
13 Ice melts down when you heat it.
14 I didn't go to Helen's party because she didn't invite me.
15 Ann can't buy a new car because she hasn't got enough money.
16 You can get access to the Intranet only by having a password.
17 She feels lonely since she hasn't got any friends.
18 Carlos Sainz didn't win the Monte Carlo Rally because his car broke down.
19 Jim missed the plane because he arrived late at the airport.
20 I don't have a modem, so I can't e-mail you.
21 I didn't send them a postcard because I didn't know their new address.
